I like the idea of X marking the spot! X is a fascinating letter... it is the mystery letter, the protagonist of algebraic equations, the letter of this kiss, the letter of XXX, the letter of treasure, the letter of conquest and the unknown. . . it is the symbol of the female chromosome, and it is the Rune for "gift" or "partnership." And don't forget Malcom X.

I was at the Tate Modern last summer (2004), and there was an exhibit of stuff dragged out of the Thames, all neatly displayed in a beautiful cabinet. One of the items was the X rune. I explore the elusive quality of X in my Strategies of X sub gallery.

Tic Tac Toe, operates on two levels, at least. One: it depicts the game with its component O's and X's. Two: it depicts love with its component XOXOXOXOXOXO's. Incidentally, X is also a Rune meaning a gift or partnership. So X participates in, at least, two languages.

Tic Tac Toe is now owned by a person who once bought a Picasso for 10 grand, despite his friends' discouragement. He was later able to sell the Picasso for enough money to fund private college education for his children.
