Mary Hallock Greenewalt began as a concert pianist but, stimulated by theatrical lighting, she became interested in color music about 1906 and gave her first concert, in Philadelphia, in 1911. She toured extensively the following year and seems to have performed regularly until the late 1930's on a series of increasingly sophisticated instruments. . . She often composed colour-accompaniments to pieces with strong programmatic associations, such as the first movement of Beethoven's 'Moonlight' Sonata. . .

Lonely Heart, acrylic on paper, 10"x14" © 1999

Lonely Heart, was inspired
by the I Ching, Hexagram 53:
"...The tree on the mountain is visible from afar, and its development influences the landscape of the entire region. It does not shoot up like a swamp plant; its growth proceeds gradually. Thus also the work of influencing people can only be gradual. No sudden influence or awakening is of lasting effect. ... This comes about through careful and constant work on one's own moral development."
